My Husband, The Chef

Most of you know David loves to cook. I'm the baker and he's the cook. It's a wonderful pairing, if you ask me. As you may suspect, David loves to cook because he loves to eat. I often catch his eyes starring at his food and drink as he allows the tastes to linger on his palette and his mind conjures up possibilties of perfect pairings of food and drink. He likes to identify tastes, flavors and spices in everything he eats. Not only that, but he loves to imagine what types of side dishes and wines would match perfectly with whatever he is eating. He even swirls coffee around in his mouth, as if it were wine. Sometimes he holds his beverages on his tongue for many, many seconds. I laugh at him because his tasting is not just a thing he does every once in awhile, it's with about everything he eats. At every meal, he can tell me what would make something better or what spice might be good in this or that dish.  I also laugh at him because I just don't operate that way (although, he has influenced me to observe such things--it's not totally natural for me), so he intrigues me into laughter.

Well, today, I decided to make some Carrot soup for lunch (without consulting David). I was in the kitchen peeling carrots and boiling water when David all of a sudden notices action in the kitchen. He gently asks from the living room, "what are you doing?" and I tell him my plan. Not even two seconds later, he was in the kitchen observing how I was going to make carrot soup. Since David knows that he tends to take over on tasks that he likes to perform (i.e.cooking), he asked if he should get out of my hair, but I welcomed him into the carrot soup making process.  After all, he'd had a hard day and I knew this would be therapy for him. He quickly found a recipe online that aligned with what we had available in our kitchen and we both assigned ourselves tasks to contribute to the end result. The whole process went smoothly. So, we made our soup and David is eating it as I write this blog. He likes it and next time, he will know exactly what spices to add or take out, making it all the better. I'm not sure why I wrote that story, I just like it.

On another cooking note, my mom bought David the Julia Child Cookbook, which he read faithfully every night for a week straight. After being inspired by Julia, he decided to make beef bourguignon last week--it was very good. Below, I have posted pics of my personal chef. Here's to David and his mad cooking skills!

  2. Hahahaha I love that story, and so perfectly told, Amber! I can just imagine you, and I can just imagine David - I'm taken back to that lovely dinner at the Tarmans' where y'all combined creativity and skills and welcomed a big group into your love for cooking and baking.

I hope these last couple of weeks go smoothly for you! I'm praying for you!
